How do I best dig into the side of a hill and reinforce?

use keystone blocks. roll out a 8 foot mat. every thrid roll of blocks, sandwich a mat between. and then tamp the back fill real good on every third row. the wall will retain the hill. i've done this in ashland oregon and built castles there.
